Victor Frankenstein-Heroic or Non Heroic?
As we see in this world, everyone has different characteristics. We have some heroic characteristics and some villianous qualties. Also we soemtimes have to battle with our internal and external conflicts that we have. One particular character that I'll be analyzing is Victor Frankenstein. Victor as a character had different qualities to him. He had some qualities that seemed antiheroic, villianous and some heroic characteristics. To start off, Victor Frankenstein is amazed with science. He is fascinated with the idea of creating life out of nothing. Despite of being amused with science, Victor has a huge heart when it comes down to the value of family and friendship. Throughout the reading, Victor tends to forget about his family. He doesn't talk to them as often as he would before. He also has problems with himself interally and even externally. He aslo comes to the conclusion that he could be in montser that is mentioned in chapter 6 of volume one. But he does not show that he's fully a villain, he basically shows that he has some bad in him. Just like others, we all have a monster inside us. Some of us hide it better than others but we all have some bad tendencies deep down inside us.
One way Victor Frankenstein shows his soft side is when he sees his cousin Elizabeth as a women. At first we see in chapter one, Victor describes Elizabeth has his "playfellow and as we grew older, my friend" (20). He continues that "she was docile and good tempered, yet gay and playful as a summer insect" (20). As we continue reading the paragraph we see how he somewhat describes her as a pet. He doesn't talk about her abilities as much as his friend Henry. With his friend Henry, he talks about all his wonderful talents that he has. He also talks about how intellgent Henry was. Moving on to chapter two, Victor sees Elizabeth differently. Elizabeth catches scarlet fever and passes it on to Victor's mom. Luckly, Elizabeth makes a quick recovery but her aunt (Victor's mom) does not. She becomes critcally ill and eventually dies. She leaves Elizabeth in charge of everything, so basically she becomes the lady of the household. Victor states "she determined to fulfil her duties with the greatest exactness; and she felt that the most imperious duty, of rendering her uncle and cousins happy, had devolved her" (26). Her life now involved in filling in her aunt's duties that she left for her. So Victor now sees ELizabeth as more mature. To him she is becoming a women. She was the only one that could console him and make him feel better. We see here that Victor is lending more to being antihero. He doesn't have hero like qualities. He doesn't do anything good that is admirable. He also doens't show Villian like qualities through these couple of pages. Later on, we'll be able to see if he really is a villain or a hero of this story.
